Ready Up! (Major VFX Project)

The Brief:
___________________________________

The Brief given to me gives me mostly creative control apart from these two conditions:
I have to use an example of a visual effect.
I have to use footage from my own sources (i.e. recording it myself)

The Idea:

The Idea is to make a sitcom intro for a cheesy 80s show, It will contain 4 characters and each will be played by just one guy... thats my base idea

There probably wont be a lot of props as its going to be filmed infront of a green screen, however outfits and VFX will fill in the use of them.

Production Schedule
_________________________________________

This is a rough idea of what the schedule will look like. This is subject to change but this gives me a grounded idea of what i have to do, and when i have to do it when i complete the project.

Inspiration:

This section will cover me looking into real life sitcom intros and adverts: such as the fresh prince of bel-air

Fresh Prince of bel-air:
For starters, i would like to recreate the aesthetics of the sitcoms including the aspect ratio of 4:3 as seen in the screenshot below. This changes the text safe area; meaning i will have to account for the viewers eyes when creating the video.

(A screenshot explaining text safe area will be under the fresh prince screenshot)

A Freeze Frame from the intro shows the 4:3 older aesthetic
This is a text safe area- and will be the guidlines for using an older medium such as 4:3; the text and actions need to happen within the safe area
otherwise the viewer can get confused

Key things to note down about Fresh Prince's opening is the more wild colours, meant for the teen audience and the camera angles and shot types used over-exaggerate the swagger of Will Smith; that typical feeling of cheesiness can be felt. I want to replicate this feeling through my colours through the VFX i add.

this frame shows the text used is large and cartoonish

The added over text is large, colourful and cartoonish. It being pink and green makes the show feel more upbeat as this bright neon green contrasts with the undertone of pink. I'm noting down that these colour contrasts can make a scene feel more nostalgic and is an appeal of these sitcom shows

Advert inspiration:
Moving onto my inspiration from adverts and i just searched up "old 80s adverts" to just gather a general aesthetic.

The more faster paced editing and these backgrounds with wild shapes and colours are something i want to replicate with the video. i like the expressions they all make and the camera angles used. the transitions the greenscreen and potentially more can be used for the VFX using 3d models. i can use this to make the video look more industrial or have that home-made feel.

The Story

This summary is short and to the point, as i feel it would be useful to gauge the overarching story of the show and, more specifically, the intro:

The Main Plot is a group of friends meet up at an arcade to get in all sorts of shenanigans; average sitcom things, it is made to be a parody of Sitcoms like fresh prince, Friends and Seinfeld. The plot isn't super important but the story just follows these 4 individuals with distinguished personalities and traits.
The intro can be simplified into plot points, ill use these points later to create my story board.
1) we see 4 friends waking up to start there day. all scenes play out together for the first scene and these are split into quadrants. these quadrants can revolve to create a smooth transition.
2) after getting up it goes into a 6 second scene of each person getting ready, this will show off their personality and introduce the audience to the characters
3) they all leave there houses with a shot of them leaving the door.
4) meeting up at the arcade they all interact for a second before the camera pans up with the pentatonic scale of the ending song, perfectly going into whatever next scene would exist

Story Boarding:

each character has a spinning bit on the floor; to show them all waking up
the camera spins and zooms in. showing each character to the audience
mid-shot zoom in

4 shots that combine to create this grid, a consistent for all characters, 4 shots of getting ready all in medium close up.
line is sharp and the background is moving

4 shots of getting ready medium to close up different colour background

another 4 shot types different background medium and close shots

final 4 shot types different background all medium shots to show that this character is dull and boring

all characters leave the door in a long shot each shot shows the personality of each character

all 4 characters pop up in each corner with a spinning arcade in the middle the logo appears and then the camera pans up

to show the logo

Custom Made Music

Creating the Music:

Evaluation.

This VFX project was extremely fun to make and I'm happy with the outcome immensely, all my ideas for the project were met as i wanted them to however I would increase the resolution, not to HD, but raise it to a different stage of 4:3. There were some time constraints, like the creation of the music and organizing the filming (this includes all preparations e.g. outfits, green screen, time) this being said I love the outcome of this project. If I were to do it again I would create a longer video, maybe an outro to the sitcom. I also lacked credits such as "produced by" or "written by" as would be seen in a sitcom.
